  1. The folk nature of many of Don’s paintings don’t speak to me, personally, though I appreciate the timely themes he addresses. I also appreciate his commitment to his work and to the local art community, as seen on his CV. I know he was a member of the gallery before, but I joined the year he left, so I can’t comment on his previous involvement.

Again, I realize that this isn’t specifically mentioned in the criteria we are asked to consider for membership, but I find it interesting, again, that none of his work seems to be for sale. It seems to me that one of the goals of the gallery is to sell art, given that we do have bills to pay. Did I miss something?

  2. When Don first applied to the gallery, the works he displayed during his application seemed interesting and reminiscent of Paul Klee, and he got my vote. But as I have seen more of his work it has begun to seem repetitive and not so inspiring. He is a pleasant person but I am not sure he belongs in the gallery. And I really hate passing judgement on other artists!

  3. Don’s work feels to me like an attempt to make “primitive” or “folk” art, but instead demonstrates a lack of drawing skill. I don’t see any growth in the work now from what I remember in the past.

I believe he also left the gallery with fairly short notice, leaving me to scramble to fill an exhibit slot. I hope to ask him during his interview why he left the gallery back in 2019 and why he’s decided to re-apply now.

  4. Don’s work is very different from most of the SOAG team and I enjoy it because it is so authentic to him. He was on the marketing committee with us and he had excellent ideas. I hope we bring him back. He has my vote.

  5. He was a former member of the gallery. He is very active and well connected in the Trumansburg community. He has relevant skills to support the gallery.
