Not much of an artist statement. Not enough details in her resume to understand her history of accomplishments. Again, I wasn’t able to see her work in person, but apart from on image which I found appealing, her work didn’t excite me.
It doesn’t bother me that Maggie does not have an online presence; that just is not everyone’s cup of tea. BUT looking at her work here on line, and at the ones she brought to the gallery, there is only one that I found impactful, and several of the ones she posted online are just plain sloppy; I am not sure what she is attempting with those. A NO vote from me (certainly if she spends a chunk of each year away; we need to pursue that in the interview, I guess.
As is often the case when going from the online presentation to the painting in front of me, I was surprised. They are huge, and that gives them some impressive impact like the big ones with tables full of crockery, those are whimsical and charming, but some of the work is just not up to par in terms of the oomph that you could get out of the interaction of pigment and water. The color can be rich and complex, and the flow of the medium can give a thrill, but Maggie is not going that extra mile. Her resume is a little thin, there is no website to see, and there are a bunch of maggie martins on instagram, but not her. I did find a video that was an interview as Franklin Gallery’s Featured Artist in Watkins Glen. it was made in August 2020, so it might not be fair to judge her present work by that, but she said her first work was still life and at that time her current works were boats, and that she spends her winters in Florida. So it might be good to ask her about when she painted the work we see in the gallery, and whether she is still wintering in Florida. soooo… I would not vote for her
