34th Annual Juried Photography Show
State of the Art Gallery is a cooperative fine art gallery operated by its artist-members from the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. We are open four days per week, and we host a new exhibit each month. As a non-profit organization, we seek to enhance the cultural and economic vitality of the community.
This is an in-gallery show. The show, once hung in the gallery, will also be available on this web site.
Entries are now being accepted! The deadline is Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at 5pm.
- Exhibit Dates: Thursday, June 1st through Saturday, July 1st, 2023.
- Selections for the show will all be judged from the digital images submitted to EntryThingy.
- Up to $1,000 will be awarded at the discretion of the prize judge.
- The prize judge (TBD) will make award selections from the photos hanging in the show.
- Submission deadline for entries is May 10, 2023 at 5pm.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must be the originating artist of all work samples submitted. Submitted work should not have been exhibited at the State of the Art Gallery prior to this show. Current members of State of the Art and their family members are not eligible.
The entry fee of $35 covers three entries per artist. Artists may submit an additional two images for an additional $5. The fees are non-refundable and do not guarantee that your work will be accepted into the show.
If your work is accepted into the show, it must be hand delivered by you or someone you designate to the gallery during the times noted at the end of this document.
The entry fee will be paid using PayPal during the entry submission procedure at EntryThingy. (A PayPal account is not required to use PayPal for this.)

Your application will not be considered complete until your entry fee is submitted and received.
All image files should be labeled as follows: Year, month, last name, FIRST NAME (all caps), image number (01,02,03 etc.), title of work (or short title).jpg. For example:

Show Design
Sales
The gallery will handle all sales, including appropriate sales tax. The gallery will charge a 30% commission on all sales
Exhibit Promotion
State of the Art Gallery will promote the show widely. It will be featured on the main page of our website for the month of June and then archived. We will post on social media and on-line newspapers, and there will be links to it on Ithaca Gallery Night website. The show will officially open on Gallery Night (First Friday). However, Covid safety restrictions may still be applied. Prize winners will be announced via social media and at the gallery. Winning art will be prominently featured on the State of the Art Gallery website along with information about the winning artists and links to their websites and social media pages if they so desire.
Terms and Conditions
Submissions to the State of the Art Juried Online Exhibit shall imply an agreement on the part of each artist to all conditions of this prospectus. Permission for State of the Art Gallery to use images of accepted works for publicity, education, and reference purposes is assumed.

FAQ
No. They may be traditionally or digitally produced and printed. There are no content, size or age specifications either. Manipulations of the image are acceptable as long as they begin with a photographic process. Scanned images are acceptable.
Image size requirements are determined by the EntryThingy process: maximum 800–1200 pixels on the long side with a file size between 150 kB and 2 MB.
All image files should be labeled with the following format to enable a variety of searches in the gallery’s online archive.
Year, month, Last name, FIRST NAME (ALL CAPS), Image number (01,02,03 etc.) title of work (or short title).jpg. For example:

Each entrant may submit up to three works for the base fee of $35. You may also submit two more works for an additional $5.
All entries must be original work created by the artist, and the work should not have been exhibited at State of the Art Gallery in the past.
You may designate a friend or family member to bring your work to the gallery. But, to be included in the show, if your work is accepted, it must be physically delivered to the gallery. We do not accept artwork by mail, nor can we store packing material. You must also arrange to pick up the work at the end of the show.
Yes. Even though the jury process is done electronically/digitally, how the work appears when it is brought to the gallery for inclusion in the show is important. In general, standard gallery approaches to matting and framing should be followed. Narrow, black, wood and/or metal frames are preferred that compliment the photograph while not dominating it. Photographs printed on paper should be under glass or plexi-glass. Non-colored mats are also preferred because they focus the attention on the photograph and not the mat. Mats should extend on average from 1½ to 3 inches from edge of the photograph to the edge of the frame. This is not a hard and fast rule, just a general acknowledgment of good presentation practice. Frames need not be expensive, just simple and professional looking.
Images can also be printed on metal, canvas, ceramic, wood and glass. The work must be ready to hang which generally means a wire or hanging device across the back or clearly identified secure devices from which to hang the work. Finally, the jury reserves the right to turn down any submission that is not presented in a professional manner, exclusive of the content.
Since this is a photography show, we do not mean that photography is the answer to this question. We would like you to tell us what process was used to print the image whether on paper, metal or other substrate.
For example, C-Prints, Digital C-Prints, Inkjet/Giclée, Photograms, or Gelatin Silver Process Prints.
Knowing this can be helpful to anyone viewing the work in the gallery.
The jury will consist of 3–5 artist members of State of the Art Gallery.
The prize judge is To Be Announced and will be an artist or art professional from one of the region’s museums, gallerys, or colleges. Previous prize judges have included art professors from Cornell and Ithaca College, other regional colleges or staff members from Cornell’s Johnson Museum.
After all the entries are in, a panel of members from the gallery made up primarily of experienced photographers, decide what will be accepted for the show. After the show is hung, a prize judge, selected from outside the membership of the gallery, looks at the show and decides how the prize money will be awarded. We try to find experienced, respected, and successful photographers and/or teachers of photography and imaging arts in order to make the experience for the entrants a meaningful process.
Yes! It has no bearing on whether or not the work is accepted into the show but we encourage everyone to offer their work for sale. It enhances the value of the show and helps to promote the idea that it is a relevant, professional offering. That being said, we will not reject a good work if the artist does not want to offer it for sale.
